Circumcision refers to the removal of the foreskin from the penis. It is normal for the foreskin to stick to the head of the penis (glans) in infancy. The glans start to separate during toddlerhood. Often, you will notice white drainage (smegma). Normally, the foreskin begins to separate in this way. There is no need to take special care of the foreskin. It can harm the baby and irritate the skin, and glans to pull back the foreskin to clean them. The foreskin can become stuck in this way, resulting in phimosis. Circumcision is usually necessary for this.
While pediatricians stress the importance of circumcision, it is ultimately a personal decision. Look over the frequently asked questions regarding circumcision to see if it's right for you, your family, and your newborn. We provide a wide range of services in the Fresno and Clovis areas.
What do medical experts recommend to parents regarding circumcision?
The U.S. has a relatively high rate of circumcision (the surgical removal of the penis foreskin) due to cultural and religious reasons. Still, it is less prevalent elsewhere in the world. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), circumcision can help prevent a child's later exposure to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In the end, parents can decide what they think is best for their children.
Is circumcision safe?
Yes. Circumcision is a safe procedure, and severe complications are rare. For the operation, we use a local anesthetic. Most patients are discharged the same day after surgery, but many describe the aftermath of the procedure as painful.
How does circumcision work?
Surgery involves removing the foreskin. After surgery, your son's penis will be red and swollen. In this case, the surgery is performed without the need for an overnight stay. He will go to the hospital the day of his surgery and go home once he is recovered. If your child does not have any other medical conditions, there is no need for lab work.
How should I prepare for surgery day?
Bring the following for your son:
Toys, music tapes, or books to encourage quiet time.
Toy or blanket that will comfort your child.
Teething toys or extra pacifiers
A change of clothes and loose clothes
What should I do after discharge?
For Tegaderm: If the bandage is clear plastic, gently peel it off if it has not fallen off by five days.
For Vaseline or Xeroform gauze: When changing diapers, gauze will fall off.
With each diaper change, cover the penile suture line completely with Triple Antibiotic Ointment (e.g., Neosporin). In this way, you can prevent the penis from sticking to the diaper or underwear.
How should I bathe my kid after getting circumcised?
Make sure the penis is clean and dry. Gently wash and pat dry the penis. Please do not rub or pull. It is common for the penis to swell and bruise for 3-5 days after the procedure. For five days, simply sponge bathe or take a shower.
